Precisely why Social media Is like High School
Oh No! Not once again!
When I was in school that is high, the most important thing about surviving and thriving was exactly about being popular. This particular concept of peer acceptance consumed us as really young adults and we constantly looked for ways to wedge ourselves into organizations which may accept us with arms which are open. We dressed strange, told jokes, joined the volleyball team, skipped school, or perhaps went so far as to experiment with things we KNEW were not a great move to make.
In case something did not work we tried another. Regardless of where we landed it looked like there was always a “better” group. There was generally those special little cliques which simply never appeared to need to work at being popular, it simply dripped off of them with no effort. Day after day you may have asked, “What is it about her/him which makes them really popular?” You did not see it, but everybody else seemingly did.
As grown ups, we look back on those times and chuckle. You giggle each time you discover that Mr. Popularity, Bob QuaterbackSmith is operating at the fathers hardware store of his or Mary TeachersPet, made it all the healthy way to assistant librarian at the community library. How could we have been so shallow? Wasn’t it so silly to be worried about all that? Right?
Well, here we’re again. Social (a.k.a. clique) Media! Grown up popularity contests all over again with the most gigantic recognition clique EVER! Ever get that “nobody loves me” blues from Facebook? The invitation of yours for friendship “denied!” Ouch! No Re-tweets from your Twitter? Crickets – from Linkedin? Seriously, how does someone pick up 39,458 pals or perhaps followers? Virtually all I can say is Welcome Back Mr. Cotter!
So where to start? Well PLEASE don’t be the one that shows their desperation with invitations to Farmville, or maybe telling bad jokes simply to be saying something (those jokes didn’t do the job then either.) Take a lesson from the master clique meisters. Certainly Mr. 39,458 buddies has figured something out you haven’t. We all know it’s not likely their physique or looks, because you cannot really tell on social media. So what’s it?
What was their secret before? Are these the same creeps that were popular in the past also? Probably but now we are all on the identical level playing field. Cuteness, fashion status, athleticism or brainiacness does not really matter on social networking. Their secret was but still is very simple – connecting. Providing the connections of theirs what they wanted, which was relating, value, and acceptance to their connections. Just like the popular children in school which is high, the successful social networking personalities reach the market of theirs with appropriate dialogue to the selective clique of theirs. In school that is high that you didn’t begin to see the jocks chatting about books in the clique of theirs what about the theatre groups, you seldom celebrated the end of the play with head butts. You target your messages to match the participants you intend to attract.
For the casual social media users, the key is usually to be yourself and the quantity of people be damned. Simply have fun and get tiktok views (more info here) value from the equipment and do not care about your following. Every once in a while a whole new friend will emerge, and you’ll feel great the folks you communicate with will be the ones that you feel comfortable talking with. Do not pressure it! It is isn’t needed and could even push people away. NOT saying a thing is OK too, or simply offering an amiable thumbs up, or re-tweet might be great.
