This hound was bred through the Newfoundland, the English Otter hound, along with the Flat-Coat and Curly-Coated Retrievers in Maryland. As the name implies, the breed was created for retrieving ducks and geese within the Chesapeake Bay, and as such is often a tough, powerful swimmer by having an oily double coat to hold it warm and dry in frozen waters. The dogs often enjoy sleeping outdoors for their love of cold temperatures. The American Kennel Club placed Chesapeake Bay Retrievers to the Sporting Dog Breeds category in 1878. The dogs range in proportions from 21 to 26 inches on the shoulder and from 55 to 80 pounds.
