People often ask us, “when buying a different air conditioning, what SEER value can you recommend?” These are kind of shocked to listen for our answer…we usually recommend at most a 14 SEER air conditioner, and in some, relatively rare occasions (think desert areas), we recommend 16 SEER. “But Tim! Our contractor stated that if we ended up the 21 SEER air conditioning equipment for $3,000 more, it’d buy itself in mere many years!” If that’s true, then I also have a bridge to promote you…to start with, you have made two mistakes: one, you listened to the contractor; avoid that (I know very well what you’re thinking…my sister just said a similar thing: “but can’t you be a contractor?”). Two, avoid getting so gullible!
SEER represents Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, which is a reason ways of evaluating the efficiency of an air conditioner. Simply put, the higher the SEER value, greater efficient one is…whether it is completely new, inside a laboratory. Consider SEER to similar to Miles-Per-Gallon (MPG) in your car. But let’s consider for any second…if you purchase an auto that gets 30 MPG, does which means that that you’re going to get 30 MPG since you race around the 405 freeway at 90 miles-per-hour, playing slalom while using the commuters? Of course not.
The Problem with Buying High-SEER Air Conditioners
Unlike MPG, SEER can be a little bit misleading when purchasing a whole new air conditioner. That’s considering that the SEER values made available to you will be calculated in the lab setting, using a very specific group of parameters (the depths this lay away from the scope want to know ,; repeat this if you wish to nerd-out: AHRI – Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute – SEER Calculation). The issue is, not one person in real life lives like that. Do that suits you your AC set to 72 degrees, or 68? Do you call home in Montana, or perhaps Palmdale, California? You can find too many variables to manufacture a statement as rash as: “you’ll pay money for the device over its 10-15 year lifetime.” This brings me to my next point – reliability.
When we make our tips for buying a new air conditioner, תיקון מזגן reliability is a huge factor for people at ASM. We just can’t recommend a unit with reliability issues, and תיקון מזגן at this point, I are not that impressed while using high-efficiency air conditioners that We have up to now (high efficiency means above 16 SEER). They typically use two-stage compressors, and I honestly do not believe we now have is fairly there yet. We have loads of repair calls on these, and oh, by-the-way, טכנאי מזגנים the various for choices about 2 or 3 times the expense of those for the fewer SEER models. As a result, תיקון מזגנים if you step beyond the laboratory and into actuality, start factoring in maintenance and repair costs, we’ve found the higher SEER units to be more costly, תיקון מזגן usually, to the consumer.
“But Tim, then why should my contractor keep telling me I would upgrade on the high-SEER unit and lower your expenses?” Ah, the important answer; we have that too. The answer is because are more expensive, because you asked, they’re able to mark them up higher, and in turn, make more profit. In truth, when pruchasing an air conditioning, some brands may very well be double with the high-SEER version straightforward standard AC units. It does not take same believe that McDonald’s asks you if you need to “Super-Size” your meal, and car salesmen try to provide you with the “luxury package.” The only real difference is, and air conditioner is utilitarian – it serves a straightforward, mechanical purpose – so, you aren’t getting plush leather and heated seats to your extra money.
For ones guidance, federal regulations require the minimum SEER valuation of 13 SEER on all newly installed air conditioners, which continues to significantly more cost-effective than it you already possess (which is probably an old 7 or 10 SEER model). If you are living in California, you might imagine, federal regulations aren’t enough…we start to use more regulations (sigh)! So, in California, the minimum SEER requirement is 14 SEER.
